How much do the bottles weigh?
Weighing around a ⅓ pound each (150 grams), the HYDAWAY bottles make weight-sensitive activities like hiking, backpacking, climbing, and travel that much easier.

Where are the bottles manufactured and what is the source of the materials?
We are producing our bottles with a trusted manufacturing partner in south China who specializes in silicone products for the kitchen and housewares industry.
The raw materials come from global suppliers of silicone and plastic. All materials are FDA-compliant and will receive 3rd-party certification of our claims before being shipped.
Is your product made from recycled materials?
Unfortunately there aren’t any recycled materials in the HYDAWAY bottles. Only certain materials can be upcycled into new products and our silicone and plastics were chosen for their functionality and manufacturability. That said, all materials are FDA-compliant and will receive 3rd-party certification of our claims before being shipped.
Have you ever had any issues with mold or mildew buildup inside the bottles?
We have been testing our prototypes for over a year and have never had this problem. We also ran a beta testing program across the country and not a single tester had any issue with mold or mildew. A third party will be testing our production run for bacteria resistance and we will share the results on our webpage this fall. Of course we recommend cleaning your bottles regularly and drying them completely before storing. The HYDAWAY is top-rack dishwasher safe and has a large opening to fit a scrub brush if needed.
How many expansion and collapse cycles can the bottles handle?
The HYDAWAY bottles were designed with durable silicone to withstand thousands of cycles of compression and expansion. A third party will be testing our production run for fatigue resistance and we will share the results on our webpage this fall.
Are these bottles recyclable once they get worn out?
We are working on a reclamation program for the HYDAWAY bottles now and hope to have something in place later this year. We have designed the bottles to last for a really long time.
How flexible is the material when it’s expanded? IE, if I grab it a little too hard will I crush it? If the spout is open and I grab it too hard am I going to make water squirt out á la children’s juice boxes?
No – it’s very rigid when filled with water. In theory you could squirt it like a juice box if you really wanted to, but for normal use it works great. Most testers are surprised at how rigid it is when filled with water, and even when empty. It was designed to mimic hard-sized reusable bottles, but with a collapsible feature.
Can I fill HYDAWAY with hot liquids?
Several of our beta testers have commented that they enjoyed using HYDAWAY for hot drinks. However, we do not recommend using the HYDAWAY bottles to hold very hot liquids.
The silicone material can easily handle very high (and low) temperatures. However, since the product is designed to fold into a thin disk, the silicone walls are not thick enough in some areas to provide enough insulation for very hot liquids.
Can the Hydaway handle external heat?
The materials used in HYDAWAY are rated to very high temperatures. We don’t recommend that the bottles be placed in a microwave, but being left in a car is not a problem. In fact leaving a spare in the glove box is a great idea when you are on a road trip.
Can the HYDAWAY be used with carbonated (sparkling) water?
We have tested the HYDAWAY with carbonated beverages like soda and it works well, however be careful opening the straw if the soda has been shaken and there is pressure built up. It can squirt out of the straw if the bottle is very full, similar to when you open a can of soda that has been shaken. By filling the HYDAWAY to only 2/3 full, you will minimize these effects.
How much of an impact can the bottle withstand if dropped?
We have performed drop tests from 20 feet with the bottles full of water. After 30 minutes of non-stop testing, we found no leaks or cracks. Just some scuff marks from the pavement.
How does the silicone for the HYDAWAY stand up to the freezer? i.e. Say I wanted to freeze a bottle of water and drink it as the ice melts slowly, would that work with this bottle’s construction?
The HYDAWAY is made from silicone, which is a material rated for very low and very high temperatures. That said, water expands when frozen, and we recommend you leave the lid off if you plan to place your full HYDAWAY into the freezer.
How does the lid work? Does the lid come off so you can clean it?
Yes, the lid unscrews from the bottle so it can be easily cleaned in the top rack of your dishwasher or by hand with most scrub brushes. You can see the bottle and lid in use in this instructional video. https://vimeo.com/105523732
What happens if the container collapses while it is full of liquid?
The HYDAWAY is completely watertight when closed properly. Therefore it won’t collapse when full of water. When the lid is off or straw is open, the bottle is fairly rigid and it doesn’t spill out, if that’s more what you are asking. Those who have had a chance to use the HYDAWAY bottles are pleasantly surprised at how much they feel like a traditional hard-sided bottle.
Does the 21 oz bottle fit in a standard size car cup holder?
Yes, the tapered design of the Large (21 oz) bottle allows it to fit in most vehicle cup holders and also in strollers and gym workout equipment.
The wide base of the Small (12 oz) bottle works best on airplane tray tables, campsites, and with kids where a stable, tip-resistant base is preferred.
Do the bottles sweat when filled with ice water?
The bottles do sweat a little bit when filled with ice and water, but not at all when filled with cool tap water.
